I Can Almost Hear it Play

Familiar and New

To keep our work fresh as photographers, it is good to challenge ourselves in new ways.

Today I wanted to capture something in my surroundings in a new way. This is indeed a challenge for me. I take many, many pictures. To think of a new way to take these pictures is often a reach for me.

I've taken many, many pictures of my daughter's piano. I've taken pictures of my daughter playing the piano and the piano at rest. Never have I taken an image quite like this one.

I'd like to put this challenge out to all you photogs out there. Look around you. Shoot an all too familiar subject in a whole new way. The results may surprise you.

Keys and Pedals

Sometimes the expected works well with photography. Here, the piano keys are the subject. It works well. You can almost get a sense of the music with the movement in the image. Though not played, they play.

Other times, the unexpected can work equally as well. The pedals of the piano are not often the subject of the picture. This image is quieter, not unlike the workers behind the scenes in an organization or office or church group. Though integral to the music, to the whole, the pedals lie quietly in the shadows of the keys.

Discord or Harmony

One man gets nothing but discord out of a piano; another gets harmony. No one claims the piano is at fault. Life is about the same. The discord is there, and the harmony is there. Study to play it correctly, and it will give forth the beauty; play it falsely, and it will give forth the ugliness. Life is not at fault. ~Author Unknown
