I took this shot with my 60 mm macro lens. My shutter speed was fast as I was shooting directly into the sun: 1/3200. My aperture was f/2.8 which allowed for some sweet bokeh.

We took in Winnipeg's first ever BBQ and Blues festival yesterday. We bought the day pass and were not sorry we did. Amazing talent, amazing food and amazing atmosphere!

Mood

I took this image with my 60 mm macro lens using available light, f2.8, and a shutter speed of 1/60. The bokeh and light's reflection off the flute contribute well to the mood I was trying to create...or rather...show. Using a colour in processing was key to revealing the sense of drama; a contrast between light and dark, happy and sad that can easily be heard in the flute's voice.

Keyed Up

Keys and Pedals

Sometimes the expected works well with photography. Here, the piano keys are the subject. It works well. You can almost get a sense of the music with the movement in the image. Though not played, they play.

Other times, the unexpected can work equally as well. The pedals of the piano are not often the subject of the picture. This image is quieter, not unlike the workers behind the scenes in an organization or office or church group. Though integral to the music, to the whole, the pedals lie quietly in the shadows of the keys.

Discord or Harmony

One man gets nothing but discord out of a piano; another gets harmony. No one claims the piano is at fault. Life is about the same. The discord is there, and the harmony is there. Though not often photographed, this is a beautiful and integral part of the piano.

There is something deeply intimate about this image. I wonder if I should look away. Maybe it was not mine to capture. But I cannot turn my gaze.
