A Time Before

Landscape Shooting

East Braintree, Manitoba

For this kind of landscape shot, it is important to have a significant depth of field. Having an overall clarity to the entire scene is key. The detail in the old wood on the bridge, the frost on the grasses beyond, the dirt road leading to the treed area in the background are important, each one.

Because of this, I chose to use an aperture of f/20. This required a slower shutter speed to allow as much light in as possible. Because I didn't have my tripod handy, I used 1/50, a reasonable speed for a hand-held camera.

Time's Threshold

I wonder if I crossed over the threshold, would I be able to sense what came before? Would I see remnants of the past that would give me clues into history? I could cross over and stay for a time, imagining, pondering and then I could leave out the back way, my life enriched, perhaps changed.

Window into a Window

We spent the day out at the farm today. It was the most beautiful day. The weather was, again, exceptional for this time of year. The wonderful couple who hosted us was gracious and generous with interesting stories and delicious food. Everything about the day was good.

I was able to look through the window of my camera lens and through the window into country life...and I liked what I saw. What a gift today has been!

The Space Between

Looking at the cityscape, I saw a space between land and clouds where the corporate offices sat, but also between urban and urban. In between my residential neighborhood, where I stood to get this shot,  and the downtown highrises was this rural patch of land, a farmer's field.

I like looking for these types of exceptions to the landscape. What is unique? What makes this interesting? How does this present in the viewfinder? All of these questions that run through my mind help me with composition.

Pattern Two

My husband and I went out to the countryside yesterday evening. Evidently, I am still searching out pattern and balance based on the pictures I uploaded to my computer when we returned. This image is particularly soothing to me. Though their lines go in different directions, the tracks and the towers share both numbers and form and give balance to the picture.

Picture Window

A picture window. A room with a view. It doesn't matter where you live or how you live, a great front window is of appeal...maybe from both sides of the pane.

I shot this scene in Manitoba in late winter/early spring. The snow had found its way into the ground...but barely.

I shot at 1/125 with an aperture of f/4.5. I bumped my ISO to 200 as it was a darker day and I wanted to keep everything well exposed.

Choosing to place the cabin off center adds more interest, makes room for the background ~ where this cabin lives. The foreground is unobstructed and a good balance to the rest of the picture's stimuli.

Spotlight - Bridge

I feel as though there is a bridge in front of me...a bridge to the next thing. It will take courage to take a step onto the bridge for I don't really know where it will take me. In many ways, in all ways, it is a leap of faith, stepping onto the bridge. I believe that taking leaps, or steps of faith is the way to go, the best way to go. Waiting until the next thing is a sure thing means I'll be waiting a long while. Instead I will trust in the One who made me. He has good plans for me so...I'll take that leap of faith.
