A bit of this. A bit of that. Neat finds on this snowy Friday morning. Check them out.

Gear Bags and Big Purses

A heavy gear bag can take its toll. I have shoulder issues and I think it is mostly because of the weight of my camera gear that I lug around rather often. Not willing to lighten this load, I'll turn to the next possible culprit, my purse.

I have big purses. My reason for having big purses is my camera must be able to fit inside whichever one I choose to carry. Have we come back to the gear bag? No. No we haven't.

I used some Christmas money to buy a new purse yesterday. This one is much smaller than previous purses I've owned and there is no possible way it will hold my Canon. My load will be lighter. My shoulders will be happier.

But wait. I'll most certainly want my camera along. I'll just be a second. I need to grab my gear bag...

Flame

The flames dance all around the sun in honour of autumn's arrival.

When showing movement, like the illusion of flames dancing in this shot, it is good to have some blur but it is also good to have spots of focus and clarity. Zeroing in on the sweet spot with a loose nod to the rule of thirds, clarity is found in the flower's center. Our eye also moves there initially because of the yellow colour - yellow draws our attention. The movement is all around in the petals' reach up and around.

Choosing the appropriate depth of field by way of aperture and a speed that blurred some movement while still enabling me to hold the camera without camera shake was key to this shot.

Don't be afraid of blur; sometimes it is a photographer's friend.

Reminisce finds her way into another very lovely treasury.

I sure like this treasury put together by Sewingseed

It never ceases to amaze me.

I go out with the intention of shooting something in particular and come home with my favourite shot or shots being of something I had no idea I'd shoot. This morning, for example, I went out into the frosty wonderland with visions of hoar frost dancing in my head. I came home, uploaded my pictures to my computer, and this is what I want to post. Go figure.

It Makes Gravel and Grit, the Raw and the Worn Sparkle

It clings to the rough edges sooner than the smooth, adding beauty to the raw and worn.

I Need Help!

I need a title and this one is not coming easy for me. Maybe you have an idea you'd like to share in the comments. If I like it, I might just use it.

Forcing Bulbs

I don't have any tulip bulbs kicking around the house to force into bloom but maybe, just maybe, if I put a tulip photo up, might spring come a little sooner? ;)

Favourite Things

I took a break from my yearly "tackling the mountain of paperwork left for a better day" task to put together a very cute, adorable, makes me want to hold a baby Favourite Things feature. If you need a precious break from whatever you are working on right now, take a moment to click and go. Ahhh...

Scarlet's Reach

Reaching for love.
When composing a picture, it is good to take into consideration how your background can help tell your story. Bokeh, clouds, or shadows can all add to what the picture is saying...so long as it is not distracting. Keeping your depth of field relatively shallow helps to do this effectively.

When looking through your lens, see what you see besides your subject. Does it help or hinder? Cut out the distraction or make it less noisy. Change your aperture or lens...or use your two feet to move and include only what you want in the shot.

Wind's Sigh and Inner Glow

Wind's Sigh

Inner Glow

No Frilly tights or black patent shoes but there is a hat.

Just the other day I was remarking that I was no longer allowed to dress my daughter the way I did a few years ago, maybe more than a few. You know, with the white frilly bum-tights, black patent shoes, girlie dress and maybe even a hat. Well, here she is, eighteen years old, and I dressed her up and even put a hat on her - and she let me take her picture.

Holding Out

I stood on the middle of the bridge and pointed my lens at the mist coming up through the last patch of open water. It wouldn't be much longer, maybe a day or two more with the cold snap, and the water would give way to winter's cover. It seems to have taken longer this year than previous years though I'm not sure why. It has felt cold enough for solid footing on the river.

Infinite Connections

Tonight I was at Art Beat Studio's show, Infinite Connections. Beautiful, healing art. Live music. Sketches. Pen and Ink. Watercolours. Acrylics. Sculpture. Mixed Media. Food. You name it, it was likely there. Many patrons, artists and curious walk-ins packed the venue to the rafters.

The artists featured were very talented and actively involved in their own wellness through the arts.

For more information on Art Beat and their Artist in Residence program
click here. If you have a chance to take this show in, I encourage you to do so. It runs until January 29.

Spring

In the midst of winter's hold, spring can feel so far away, locked behind time itself. But slowly and surely, new life emerges as winter begins to fade. I am left with memories alone as the sun warms my face and flowers start to grow.

Favourite Things...and I'm waiting for warmer weather.

It has been on the chilly side here in my neck of the woods. I am waiting for days I can spend hours at a time outside taking pictures. I suppose I can choose to go outside now and spend that amount of time in the great outdoors but by the end of my shoot, I just might be minus a digit or two.

In the meantime, I will share a few of my favourite things from the land of Etsy. Why don't you stop by these shops and take a look?
